There are a rare number of teachers who are naturally born to teach. Teaching is a form of art that requires unlimited patience, a toolbox of tried and true effective strategies, and most importantly visible passion. I also believe that there is no student who is not teachable. Everybody is unique and born with talent. If a teacher is able to figure out the different characteristics and aptitude of each individual student to develop the potential talent from different views, it is possible to enable the students to achieve what they are good at and what’s desired..
To enable students to exceed teacher is the best teacher. A teacher’s real talent is not presenting on how well he/she is able to teach but how he/she can inspire and trigger students’ learning motivation and arouse students’ craving for knowledge. A teacher is like a lighter who lights up students’ talent and passion to study, A teacher is a sheepherder leading the students to the grass land of knowledge. Love and devotion is the basic foundation of successful teaching and renovation is the dynamic leading to the achievements.
To teach is to shape the knowledge and skills of students, to influence their potential future paths, and to inspire them to become global, productive, and respectful citizens of the world. Meanwhile, to learn is to hold on to curiosities, to experiment and develop skills, and to more conveniently navigate everyday life by using what’s learned. I would like to be the ever encouraging teacher that goes around to each and every single student. I want to meaningful touch at least a few students’ lives. Seeing students smile and feel comfortable to enjoy learning is one of the biggest motivations for me. To see students produce more than before, eagerly approach independent work, and shift their attitudes towards learning is one of the biggest satisfactions. I choose to teach because I want to change lives. I believe that every detail in teaching will influence students’ life. Sincere appreciation will build up students confidence to surf in the ocean of knowledge and create their own world. Tolerance is to understand and respect those students who are making mistakes, to give them opportunities to experience difficulties and failures and to meanwhile provide them assistance in looking for solutions and self-correcting, which is regarded as a procedure of making progress. I believe that every student is expecting to be successful and praised. I hold the truth that “failure is the mother of success”.
From being a student in the TCSOL program, I have learned various teaching theories and strategies.
From Professor Han Zhaohong, I have learned how to do TBLT in details and what is focus on form and focus on forms as well as how to do communicative language teaching. Her guidance opens my eyes to different types of teaching strategies as she illustrated deeper and wider view of doing TBLT. The most valuable point is that she showed us how to put pedagogical theories in to practice in the way she taught through out the whole session which I believe will add value to our teaching process.
From Professor Liu, we have learned wide range of Chinese language domain and he presented us the traditional Chinese rich, extensive and profound culture.
From Professor Yan Lin, I have learned more in-depth Chinese language knowledge, and the necessity of educational linguistics and developing trust and joy in the classroom atmosphere. Her valuable teaching experiences will benefit our teaching skills.
From Professor Sun, I have learned different theories and teaching methods convinced by a large number of experiments which lead me to the new insights. Based on the research of how languages are learned by children and adults and Krashen’s hypothesis, etc, I can now utilize this new knowledge of how language information is processed to facilitate language learning.
From Professor Qi, I have learned to reflect on all aspects of teaching, such as syllabus preparation, incorporating motivation, pulling background knowledge, designing a meaningful activity and assessment.
Overall, I have also learned that each and every single student should be heard. As a language instructor, my goal is to make students feel involved in their own learning. For them to be heard and involved, my lessons will include round robin activities where everyone is required to actively participate. To ensure 100% engagement from students during other class activities such as small group talk and turn and talks, I will designate each student to have some specific role to hold them accountable (e.g. group scribe, group representative).
In my classroom, I will occasionally teach short mini lessons when appropriate and allow students to work and actively develop their listening, reading, writing and speaking skills the rest of the class time. Giving them a lot o time to work will help them actively develop their skills, I will incorporate group work for peer to peer learning and self-reflection. To have stamina in being engaged, focused, and actively developing their language skills, I will equip them through modeling, providing real life activities they can connect to and circulating around the room to assist and encourage each individual.
In my classroom, I will include learning from watching relevant video clips, reading newspapers and magazines, dancing for expression, creating posters, role play and using the internet and media technology. These different modes of learning will capture the motivation of each unique individual student.
Perhaps the most important concept I have learned is that learning should be transparent. Students should know what they are learning and how. Students should know all of the teacher’s plans and how the unit will progress. Only when they know what, why, and how they are learning can the students be active participants in their own education. More recently, I have learned the importance of self reflections. This can be done through interest surveys, metacognition of their learning, journaling what was learned and the significance of it, reflecting on their progress, and brainstorming next steps. Self assessment is equally significant as well and relevant tasks can consist of grading oneself and assessing if objectives were learned.
I hope to be a teacher to build up a bridge between English and Chinese to introduce magnificent Chinese culture to the world.
